Archipelago - Sandhamn

4 March 2018

Today, we explore my first archipelago - Sandhamn! The SL card offers free rides on ferries to selected islands from December till April. Yes, the winter months to encourage traffic. The journey takes 2 hours from the city. 1 hour by bus and 1 hour by boat. We took the bus from Slussen which brought us to Stavsnäs where we boarded the ferry. We arrived at Sandhamn at 11.45am.

The Stockholm archipelago is a cluster of some 30000 islands, skerries and rocks and begins just a few minutes away from the city of Stockholm. Source from Stockholm Archipelago.

One buys the ferry ticket on board. For SL card, we just tap the card and we get a printed ticket. Otherwise, it costs SEK58/RM29 one way.

How the food price list looks like. Coffee or tea for SEK25. Cinnamon bun for SEK28 each. Cheapest sandwich with cheese for SEK30. Expensive? Depends on your budget.

It was my first time going through icy waters.

Everything is white on Sandhamn Island. This place is usually bustling during summer but today, it was empty except for the people who just got off the boat. Seriously, the town is empty.

We walked towards the beach which is full of snow. There is no sand here, though. Just little stones and rocks underneath the snow.

Back at the harbour (to catch the 1.20pm ferry) and people start to appear to catch the ferry too. The local transport is a bit different here. There are no cars but motorcycles or buggies with a carrier behind to load stuff or people.
