Tastebud : GUTE

28 December 2022

Grilled food for dinner at GUTE. Earlier today, my sister and I did Nordic ice-skating and I think we deserve the grilled plate. We were really tired and needed our energy. Luckily, my boyfriend booked this place. We were hoping that there will be an available spot in AG but we were too late in making reservations. This place was surprisingly good too!

Here is our appetizer. We decided to get an appetizer because our main dish takes 45 minutes to prepare. This is charcuterie for SEK185.

Main dish - Côte de Boeuf - whole grilled rib on a bone 1kg with fries, tomato salad, red wine sauce and bearnaise sauce for SEK1295. It is recommended for 2 persons to share but we shared it between 3 of us. So, we added risotto too - SEK165. We finished our plate of grilled meat within 15 minutes! The melted fat and the meat are so good together.

I decided to be adventurous and had irish coffee. SEK155. It is slightly warm.

For dessert, we had blueberry pie for SEK125 and creme brulee for SEK115. This creme brulee is more expensive than the one we had in Griffins Steakhouse for SEK65. Maybe because SEK65 was a lunch price? Lunch prices are usually slightly cheaper than dinner prices. I confirmed this - the dinner price for a creme brulee in Griffins Steakhouse is SEK105.

Nordic ice skating at Flatenbadet

28 December 2022

It was in my sister's bucket list to do Nordic ice skating. She wanted to skate on a frozen lake. I am lousy in skating and I have tried it before but I still suck. However, I booked two spots for us because she 1) she is here on holidays and I should try to fulfil her request 2) she has joined me for my hikes when no one else wanted to join - because you know, who wants to suffer multiple days hike and high altitude - she followed me to Kinabalu, Everest Base Camp and Kilimanjaro. I have followed her on a birdwatching activity in Nepal and now this. So, she has one favour left to obtain from me. One of the benefits of having a sister - you make her do the activity together with you regardless if she enjoys it or not.

I booked two spots for SEK1650 each in the beginner course with Green Trails, as found by my sister. She emailed the company to confirm that it is a beginner course as it was described in the website - no experience required. They replied - No experience in skating is required. However, when we got there, out of 15 participants, only 3 could not skate. I did not have a good time because the two guides followed the others. My sister followed me the whole time and one of the guides check on me occasionally but I could not catch up with them. The other 2 who could not skate had more confidence than me and did not mind falling. So, I was the slow one. I was not very good in learning how to skate and for the guides, it was very easy for them, obviously and tried to give me some lessons like stand on one foot  and push, and mentioned that my sister was giving good instructions. We were provided with skates, poles, helmet, knee pads, a bag with dry clothes and a floating device in case we fall into the ice and also ice picks. My sister lent me her butt-pad and yet, I still manage to fall on the part where the butt-pad does not cover.

The day started by us meeting at the Green Trails office at 9am and was given a brief introduction on safety and how the day will be like. Here, we were given our skate boots (mine were size 39), bags, and our thermos filled with lentil and tomato soup.

The guides drove us to Flatenbadet which is located at the south of Stockholm.

Yeah, I was still happy walking on the ice until I put on the skates. I was not very good with the balance and could not skate much.

I am pointing to where I started. It is not very far but it felt so to me.

I was very happy when it was lunch break. The guides made a fire. We drank our soup. There were gingersnaps and mulled wine. There was tea too but no coffee. I was surprised but I think it is not a big deal for the participants because they are not from Sweden. Only Swedes drink coffee.

After lunch, we were splitted up into 2 groups. The advanced group and us, 4. The advanced group skated on another lake while we skated freely on the current lake. On our way back to the land, we saw a frozen fish. Its tail was frozen under water and the other half of the body was above the ice.

My ankles were very tired in the beginning and it got more tired after lunch and began to fall inwards the whole time. I retired early at 2pm. My sister and the other 2 skaters ended half an hour later. The advanced group finished at 3pm. We were back at the office slightly before 4pm. As a beginner course, I have definitely lost my interest in pursuing this activity. We were very long on our feet and I was not enjoying it. I think the Green Trail should amend the description in the activity - some form of experience is required.

To me, this activity was torture and I think it was not worth the monies. There were many other skaters on the frozen lake. So, one can actually skate without going with any group. You may even try renting Nordic ice skates and it is definitely cheaper. Also, the scenery was similar after 30 minutes of skating. If you are here for a short stay and have limited budget, I would say rent the Nordic ice skates and bring your own hot drink.

Tastebud : Griffins' Steakhouse

23 December 2022

Christmas Eve's eve and I worked half day today. I started my holiday with lunch at Griffins' Steakhouse. Really delicious today's lunch with Beef Rydberg for SEK165. Unfortunately, coffee is not included as most places do. Lunch deals usually include coffee or tea. I suppose this is the fancy sort of restaurant because we got complimentary bread. Lunch deals do not usually include complimentary bread.

For dessert, we had creme brulee for SEK65 and a cup of brewed coffee for SEK38. That is pretty expensive brewed coffee.

Tastebud : Ong Vietnam

21 December 2022

Lunch with my colleague at Ong Vietnam. We wanted to celebrate the year-end and the completion of our tasks. It was a simple lunch for SEK115. Chicken fillet with rice noodles. Nothing exciting with the taste of the food.

Tastebud : Tabbouli Söder

20 December 2022

They said that the best Lebanese food is in Tabbouli. But I knew of that only I have eaten at this restaurant. I can only concur to that statement. We decided to step inside this restaurant because we overheard someone on the street (literary he walked past us) telling his friend that there is a good restaurant nearby. It was dinner time and my boyfriend took out his Google Map and saw this restaurant with good ratings. So, we popped in and we were surprised to see that it was full. We took our chance and asked if there were any available tables. Yes, they have! Tabbouli has many branches and we were at the branch located in Söder.

First dish - Shish kafta which is grilled ground chuck, grilled vegetables, garlic cream and spiced yoghurt for SEK265. Chuck is part of the cow which is right after the neck.

Second dish - Sahen michvie mchakal which is a plate of mixed grilled meat that is made up of lamb of racks, chicken filet, ground chuck and with grilled vegetables, mixed paprika, mixed aubergine, yoghurt and halloumi cheese for SEK425.

Third dish - Fatayer which is spinach piroger for SEK95. Makanek which is butter-fried lamb sausages for SEK125. The grilled dishes (first and second) came with bulgur.

For dessert, we had baclava which is SEK49 and chocolate truffles for SEK40. Chocolate truffles were really good!

Tastebud : Villa Godthem (Christmas buffet)

13 December 2022

Christmas buffet for 2022! At Villa Godthem. This place is huge and brightly lit too. I like it so that I can see the food I am eating. It costs SEK795 per person. I enjoyed the dessert the most. Lovely chocolate truffles.

Christmas Market at Sigtuna

11 December 2022

After the Christmas market in Gustavsberg, we went to the one in Sigtuna the next day. It was a very huge difference!

I read before that one of the best Christmas markets in Sweden is in Sigtuna. Sigtuna is the first town in Sweden. I was here in July 2018 and now, I am back during winter. It is a beautiful Christmas market and it has lots of items for sale. It was so enchanting with the snow around us. The market was scheduled to be opened by 11am but we arrived by 10.40am because we wanted to find a parking spot. It was a good thing we came early because the place became so crowded by 11.30am. We were lucky that we could enjoy the lesser-crowded streets earlier. On our way back, we saw the roads leading to Sigtuna lined with cars. It was a very long traffic queue!

We bought a bottle of blackcurrant mulled wine for SEK80.

Christmas market at Kattholmen, Gustavsberg

10 December 2022

The last time I went to a Christmas Market was at in November 2019. After that, it was the two pandemic years and. It was really nice to be able to go to a Christmas Market again. This year, we went to the market by Kattholmen which is in Gustavsberg. One won't come here unless one stays nearby or has heard about it. The market is small and we were here for about 25 minutes only and that includes buying cheese and sausages.

I bought a packet of roasted almonds for my sister for SEK40. In my first Christmas Market in Täby Park in December 2017, I had a packet of roasted almonds for SEK30. Everything is definitely more expensive now.

Tastebud : Cafe Koya

8 December 2022

After our dinner at Take Ramen, we crossed the street and went to a Japanese-inspired cafe which serves desserts. It is so convenient. Japanese dinner followed by Japanese dessert. I am not sure if it was a coincident that these 2 places are located opposite each other but it is a very strategic arrangement! We did not stay long at Take Ramen because it was getting noisier with the small space and we had finished our dinner too. Also, there were not much options to eat for dessert in Take Ramen.

This place, Cafe Koya, was unexpected for me. I never thought I would see these desserts in Stockholm. I was very pleased to see this. The desserts I usually see in Stockholm or the whole of Sweden for that matter of fact were the usual cakes such as Princess green cakes, chocolate mousse, or any flavour of mousse, carrot cake and ... well, I do not have any more to name. Even red velvet cakes are rare! These are Japanese sponge cake and green matcha layered cake. Each slice costs SEK65. It is expensive when I convert it to RM. It is about RM28. The cakes were so delicious! For the first time, I tried brown rice tea which costs SEK48 and the roasted brown rice smells lovely.

Definitely a must to come back!

Tastebud : Take Ramen

8 December 2022

Japanese food at Take Ramen today. When I first saw the name, I read it as 'take' as in 'take your stuff'. It was hilarious when I realised the pronounciation is 'ta-kay'. The restaurant is small and one is allowed 1.5 hour seating. Well, one does not need a very long time to finish a bowl of noodles. The place was filled up pretty fast and I understood why when I tasted the food. The soup was so creamy, silky and thick. Gawd.. it was soooo good.

I had the Tonkotsu for SEK155. The dish is described as Pork paitan mixed with Take's tare. Topped with; cahshu (pork belly), scallion, menma (Japanese condiment made from bamboo shoots), seaweed and soy marinated egg. There were only 5 types of ramen and all of the ramen are sold for SEK155 each.

Tastebud : Tjabba Thai

7 December 2022

Usually, I do not go for Thai food because the food does not differ much from Malaysian food. Today, I decided to go ahead with it because I have not had Thai food for a long time and my friends gave me two options - either Tjabba Thai or an Asian buffet restaurant. I am not into buffet food. So, I chose Tjabba Thai. The food was really delicious. I think most probably because I was very hungry and I have not had rice for a long time. The dishes were served with rice. The meal became affordable when all of us shared the food. In total, we paid SEK239 per person for 3 dishes and rice, and my sister's cup of tea.

The first dish that came out was Tom Yam Gong and we ordered a big portion for 3 persons. The soup was piping hot and just perfect for the cold weather. Sour and hot. YUMS! SEK239.

Next dish - Geng keo wan gong which is scampi in green curry. SEK239. This is not spicy.

Third dish - Gai tood which is fried chicken fillet with sweet chilli sauce for SEK199. We contemplated between this and fried chicken wings but we chose this because we did not want to pay for the bones in the chicken wings.

The big bowl of rice for the 3 of us.

My sister was here for a visit! So, she is really happy to get some rice and hot food. I told her to enjoy the rice because she would not know when the next opportunity comes as my pantry does not have rice.
