Storkyrkan (Stockholm Cathedral)

3 July 2018

Last year in 2017, I went to all the free churches around Stockholm (Katarina, Sofia, German, Saint James) and paid for one which is Riddarholmen Church. One of the high churches that I have not stepped in is Storkyrkan - Stockholm Cathedral because one needs to pay an entrance fee. One can see this church when one takes a panoramic view of Gamla Stan.

Today, I finally got enough funds to pay for the entrance fee - SEK60. Yes, it is a lot for a jobless person!

Storkyrkan (The Great Church), officially named Sankt Nikolai kyrka (Church of St. Nicholas) and informally called Stockholms domkyrka (Stockholm Cathedral), is the oldest church in Gamla stan, the old town in central Stockholm, Sweden. Source from Wikipedia.

When I stepped in, I understood why was there an entrance fee. Everything was just 'a lot' in its designs and details.

The most famous of its treasures is the dramatic wooden statue of Saint George and the Dragon attributed to Bernt Notke (1489). The statue, commissioned to commemorate the Battle of Brunkeberg (1471), also serves as a reliquary, containing relics supposedly of Saint George and six other saints; Saint Blasius, Saint Germanus, Saint Leo, Saint Martinus, Saint Donatus and Saint Cyriacus. A copy from the early 20th century is found on Österlånggatan just south of the church. The Saint George is a symbolic representation of Sten Sture, the dragon is the Danish King Christian I, and the Princess is Sweden. Source from Wikipedia.

If you come in for a prayer session, you don't need to pay. Just drop in during the prayers' session. I was there during a prayer's session and I sat behind because I did not understand what was going on. They sang a song, and the priest explained something.
