Camping at Vattgruvmossen

26 September 2025

I celebrated my birthday by camping in a nature reserve so I can enjoy some peace and quiet. I took leave from work as I did not want anyone to ruin my day. My boyfriend chose Vattgruvmossa which happens to be part of the trail for Sörmlandsleden 11 and 12. I did some of the trails for Sörmlandsleden until it became troublesome to take the public transport. It was better to drive instead. So, I stopped until trail 13.2. We drove here. I did not want a place that was too far and I set a driving limit of 1 hour.

I was very lucky with the weather. It was sunny despite the chilly temperature. There were other cars at the parking spot. The public toilet is very clean.

I walked this trail - Sörmlandsleden 11 and 12 in 2019 and I had the same photo of the signboard. This time, we did not do any long trails. We walked around the area. There were many mining holes that are now filled with water.

We followed the orange sign.

Coffee and bun break during our walk. I really had it easy for this walk. Just enjoying the scenery and quietness.

For lunch, we brought cold pasta with sausage. We cooked it the day before. We found a spot facing the sun and had our lunch.

Then, we walked back to the designated camping spot to set up our tent. Luckily, we did it early as two groups came in the evening and walked past our camping site. I suppose that they want their own spot too. The designated camping site has a windshed, place to build a fire and a wooden bridge that goes a little bit out on to the lake. One can sleep in the windshed with just the sleeping bag and skip the trouble of bringing a tent.

In the evening, I learnt how to bushcraft. I have heard of this word before but I never understood what it meant. I have seen survival tv-programs where individuals compete to stay in the wilderness alone and they carved a lot of chopsticks from sticks. Apparently, that is bushcrafting. My first bushcraft was a spoon! I was so impressed with myself. It took me 30 minutes. It was still rough around the edges and I brought it back to file and polish it.

My boyfriend helped me to carve around the edges by using a roller knife. I was not familiar on how to use the roller knife as I was required to bring the knife towards me instead of from me. I had to learn how to control the knife so that I do not hurt myself.

After bushcrafting, we had dinner. First, we had grilled bread on a stick. I made the bread dough the day before and we pinched some dough and rolled it around a stick. Then, put it over the fire to bake the bread. It was so good and yummy. Hot bread. I flavoured the dough with salt and thyme spices. Then, we had our dried food. It was a quick meal of boiling water and pouring it into our dried food packet (ours is from Real Turmat). Waited for 8 minutes and we could eat it. We do not own a large camping stove to be able to cook soup or a simple meal. I camped with my friend on Rånö and she brought her camping stove for us to cook potato and carrot soup.

It was a beautiful evening by the lake with a thick mist hanging over it. This was 6.56pm.

The next day, the mist was thicker and has covered the entire lake. This was 7am. It was cold for me, and I was happy that I got hot coffee to warm my hands.

Lifesaver coffee to start our day. Beautiful morning greeted us!

We drove back after our coffee. It was a nice one-night getaway surrounded by nature.

Back home, I filed and polished my wooden spoon. The final step is to rub it with mineral oil so that the spoon does not dry out and creates a barrier from moist.

My very smooth wooden spoon.

Now, my wooden spoon is ready to be used! I am so proud of myself!
